I truly cannot stress enough, how we are all products of our environment and that in some way, shape or form everyone is influenced by what is directly around them. That is why I can think of nothing more beneficial than surrounding yourself with healthy minds, active bodies, and positive attitudes on a regular basis. In that sense, CrossFit Stamford is a veritable goldmine.
I first walked into
CrossFit Stamford a little over a year ago. I would be lying if I told you the
transition was seamless. Being in the globo-gym mindset made it hard at first.
I even relapsed a couple times, putting the headphones back on and being caught
in isolation movements (yeah, I liked to still give the girls a curl every once
and a while). Luckily the coaches caught me, humbled me but better yet educated
me. I hate to say it, but in retro-spect, the globo-gym workout was a colossal
waste of time.
Back to what makes the
CrossFit experience so great and unique. It’s not a coincidence that the atmosphere
in our gym is one of Fun, Teamwork, Support, and Camaraderie. We have great
members who in turn foster a great culture. Disclaimer: it’s infectious and
contagious and once you drink the “kool-aid” there’s no turning back. It’s this
culture, community, and the fact that we never take ourselves too seriously to
enjoy a good laugh every now and then, that makes CrossFit Stamford stand apart
(and keeps it member coming back for more workouts and more punishment on a
regular basis). While to some it may seem as though we are obsessed. I’m sure
you’ve heard, “All that CrossFitters talk about is CrossFit and CrossFit ONLY!”
However, to us the best part about CrossFit is that it really is not an end, in
and of itself! It’s the gateway to our optimal performance both inside and
outside of the gym!
Maybe I want to improve
my volleyball game? To have the ability to get into a lower defensive stance (improved
flexibility), to take a quicker first step (improved mobility) or to jump
higher (greater power and speed) at the net; none of which can hurt. Or an
awareness of the foods I eat and the direct correlation they have with how I
feel and look. Or the increased confidence to take that leadership position at
the office and know full well that I will get the job done. One of the most
exiting parts of the CrossFit experience is discovering how interconnected it
is with all things life.
For those of you still
not buying that we do other things, jump into a class, introduce yourself to someone
new. Like CrossFit, our members interests and passions are as broad and diverse
as the workouts. We have the most robust group of professionals,
recreationalists, and athletes. You’ll meet base jumpers, chefs, freestyle
snowboarders, teachers, ultra-endurance athletes, law enforcement professionals,
people who run with bulls for entertainment, just to name a few. Ultimately
it’s this diverse community which makes CrossFit unique. And just remember, if
you don’t have someone to do it with, it’s not worth doing.
